If you’re early in your finance career, you may think that your objective is to do your job. That’s part of your duty. But you’re better than that.

If all you focus on is being a doer, and going from one project to the next, you miss out on understanding the greater connections.

As you progress in your career, be sure to ask the more loaded questions:

1. Why is my Director asking me to do this?
   
   
2. What does he or she care about and how can I lend support?
   
   
3. What can I do to make his or her life easier?
   
   
4. How can I make this deliverable even better?
   
   
5. What am I missing about the connection to the bigger picture?

The goal of your work isn’t to build models and tools. The goal is to help others on your team and in your company make more confident, better decisions.

Be curious.

Make the connections.

Serve others as fully as possible.
